COMMUNITY RADIO AND PRAGYA KENDRAS MAKES ITS MARK IN JAIL ADALAT IN DALTONGANJ

On the eve of the 60th Republic Day of India while majority of the citizens were basking under patriotic spirit and fervour, it brought about “real” freedom to 15 prisoners of Daltonganj jail in the state of Jharkhand through the “Jail Adalat” which was organised inside the premises of the jail.

A two hours Jail Adalat was organised for the 638 prisoners. The focus of the program was on “Plea Bargaining Act” and other acts which help the prisoners to get freedom with simple punishment for their offences after applying to JHALSA. They also focussed as to how the same could be popularised through the community radio and the Pragya Kendras at the panchayat level.

On this occasion the Community Radio wing of Alternative For India Development – the national level NGO with its wide operations in Jharkhand, Orissa and T.Nadu - “Chala Ho Goan Mein “( Come lets go to the village) staged a street play on the subject of “Plea Bargaining Act” followed by powerful songs with legal messages embedded in the local dialect. AID which is also running 600 Pragya Kendras in every Panchayat of the Palamu Division covering the districts of Garwah, Latehar and Palamu which are internet kiosks which enables the public to get all the government services at their door steps and as well as has joint business proportions , held discussions with the team of the distinguished legal fraternity to start video conferencing at the block levels to enable the villagers to interact with their relatives who are held in the Daltonganj jail as this could greatly minimise the travel expenses and overcrowding at the jails.

The District Judge Mr.Girendar Kishore Verma, Sub judge cum Secretary Legal Pradhikar Sewa – Mr.Chandra Bhushan Singh, Mr.Jogesh Mani A.C.G.M, Mr.Jha Jail Superindent, Jailor and Advocate Mrs.Sharma and other advocates attended the Jail Adalat. Mr.Karan Thapa – District co-ordinator of the Common Service Centres in Palamau district - AID, Mr.Suresh Kumar Co-ordinator of Community Radio - AID and members of the cultural wing of AID participated in the program.
